Floating Wetlands Project

by Rob Zisette

Floating treatment wetland systems (floating wetlands) are engineered, vegetated rafts made of natural or inert materials that mimic floating bog mats. Root systems of the planted vegetation extend deep into the water and become covered with a biofilm comprised of a variety of microbes (algae, bacteria, fungi, and protozoans).

The biofilm grows rapidly, taking nutrients and other pollutants from the water, improving water quality by reducing the nutrient supply for phytoplankton growth, and hence reducing algae blooms. The biofilm also readily adsorbs toxic pollutants dissolved or suspended in the water. Ultimately, the biofilm sloughs and becomes incorporated into lake sediments. Some nutrients (approximately 20%) are also incorporated into the planted vegetation during active growth that become incorporated into the wetland media. Floating wetlands also reduce high water temperatures from shade. The degree of water quality improvement depends primarily on the floating wetland area in relation to the water body area, but also depends on nutrient concentrations, water currents, temperature, and dissolved oxygen.

Green Lake Water Quality – Feb. 26, 2022

Secchi Depth: 2.3 meters, (7.5 feet)
Water Temp:   5.2 C, (41.4 F)

Lake Water Quality is monitored weekly by Jeffrey Howard at East Green Lake from the T-dock near the Green Lake Community Center or from a boat at the deepest part of the lake. The weekly data are reported quarterly and uploaded to the King County Lakes website available here. Select “Green-1” and “View Data”. General lake information, water quality data, and reports are available here.

For continuous Green Lake Water Level and Temperature Gauge data tracked by King County, go to the King County Hydrologic Information Center website where you can search for both temperature (in C) and lake elevation. Here are instructions:
1. Click on either Water Temperature or State Only Gage to get a map of monitoring sites.

Green Lake Stewards Work Party – March 19, 2022

Green Lake Work Party Saturday morning – March 19, 2022, 9AM to 11AM

Hello Stewards…

Happy Late February! Hope this email finds you well.

We are moving our usual 2nd Saturday of the month work party to the 3rd Saturday in order to accommodate a shipment of bare root plants that we will receive in mid-March, so we be planting!
Thus, we are having a work party, limited to 20 volunteers, on Saturday, March 19th, from 9 am to 11am.

  • Be Vaccinated: Participants, 12 years and above, are required to be vaccinated to participate in volunteer events. As most volunteer events are not staffed with City employees we are asking participants for voluntary compliance.
  • Wear a Mask: Plan to wear a mask. Volunteers may only remove their face coverings when working outdoors if they are at least six feet away from other volunteers, staff, or visitors not in their household. We will have a small number of disposable masks on hand as back-up.
  • Come Symptom Free: Please do not attend the event if you have been experiencing any of the following symptoms: cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, fever, chills, shaking with chills, muscle pain, headache, sore throat, new loss of smell or taste or if anyone in your household is suspected or diagnosed with COVID-19.
  • Bring your own work gloves.
  • We will work separated with social distancing in mind.
  •  RSVP at https://seattle.greencitypartnerships.org/event/19962/, if you are interested.

If you arrive late, follow the Event signs to find the work site:

Date: March 19, 2022
Time: 9 am to 11 am
Meet: Beside the Aqua Theater at the east end of the Small Craft Center (5900 West Green Lake Way North)

Dress for the weather and the dirty work, wear close-toed shoes and bring a bottle of water. Hope to see you there!
