Opening of Meeting: Meeting called to order by Gayle. Purpose of meeting; to review the 10 year history of Friends of Green Lake for benefit of new members.

Election of Garet Munger as vice president. Gayle introduced motion to have Garet elected to fill vacant position of vice president. Motion was seconded by Karen Schurr. Appointment of Garet Munger as vice president was approved with voice vote of those in attendance.

After introductions by attendees, Gayle Garman, President, noted that the Recording Secretary, Davis Patterson, was not able to attend and asked for a volunteer to take notes. Brian DeLuca volunteered and took these notes.

Karen Schurr, Treasurer, went over the income and expenditures since the last meeting, and reported account balances. FOGL accounts are at BECU. FOGL is 501(c)3 certified by the IRS and all donations are tax-deductable.

Monitoring Report: Students, Gavin Hashimoto and Alex Klein presented their report of temperature and its relationship to water clarity, as measured with a Secchi disc, and the relationship between the lake level and precipitation for weekly measurements from September – December 2009. In neither situation did their analysis show that this single factor alone was responsible for the changes. The wind, the controlled outlet of the Lake and other factors also impact the clarity and water level. Richard Fleming noted that their graph of lake level documented the several weeks at the end of 2009 when the screen in front of the Meridian Drain was clogged with debris, which caused slowly increasing water levels until it was cleared. Gavin and Alex concluded that a direct correlation between Temperature/Clarity and Water Level/Precipitation was not observed.

Presentation on Milfoil: Kevin Stoops, Director of Planning and Development, Seattle Department of Parks and Recreation, reported based on a paper he had written for presentation to North American Lake Management Society (NALMS) in late 1990’s regarding milfoil at Green Lake, called “Harvest Today, Eradicate Tomorrow: Eurasian Water Milfoil Control in Green Lake, WA.”  Highlights of Kevin’s presentation:

Monitoring: Richard Fleming, Monitoring Chairman, reported that total rainfall for the calendar year is normal, despite an unusually dry summer.

Water quality samples were collected from Green Lake on Monday, Sept 28.

Secchi depth was 3.2 meters or 10.6 ft, the same as the prior sampling on Sept 14 and similar to the average for 2005-2007 at this time of year (graph sent to Ellen for Website). In late summer thru early fall of 2008, secchi depth (water clarity) was extraordinarily high (22 ft) but we are not seeing that pattern repeated in 2009.

UPDATES from Seattle Parks & Recreation – Kevin Stoops

1. Warning signs on up about eating carp -10 are up; 20 have been made
2. Soccer Fields #2 and #7 will go out to bid tomorrow ( June 24^th). Mud in rain runoff from the fields gets to Green Lake and adds nutrients. SP&R believes artificial turf and underlying drainage improvements will control run-off from the fields.
3. New Lights will be installed on field #7 (separate contract)
